The demise of a Minke whale measuring 24 feet long was probed by marine biologists after its corpse was found at Westhampton Beach on Monday.
According to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, which deals with rescues of sea creatures along the Northeast coast, the whale that was decomposing had initially been found on a sandbar in Moriches Bay last Friday.
On Monday, the deceased whale emerged and landed on Cupsogue Beach County Park. Despite being in an advanced stage of decomposition, the Atlantic society collaborated with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries, and Suffolk County parks to safely transport the whale for an autopsy later that same day to uncover what caused its passing.
According to biologists, the Atlantic marine society has attended to eight enormous whales this year under the umbrella of the NOAA Fisheries Unusual Mortality Event.
Biologists believe that the whale, which showed signs of a heart condition, resembled other deceased whales in the vicinity. It is possible that it originated from the New York Bight region, which spans from Cape May, New Jersey to Montauk Point and has had cases of stranded Minke whales with infectious ailments.
Officials reported that the burial of the whale took place on the beach in the afternoon of Monday.
The Atlantic Society officials urge people to contact the New York marine mammal and sea turtle stranding hotline at 631-369-9829 if they come across any marine creatures in need of assistance.
