Police Investigate Tragic Fatality as Pedestrian is Struck and Killed on Middle Country Road
CORAM, NY – A somber cloud hangs over Middle Country Road following a tragic accident Friday night that claimed the life of a local man. Robert Trombly, 56, of Coram, was killed while attempting to cross the busy thoroughfare, a scene that has become all too familiar for residents concerned about pedestrian safety.
The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of Mooney Pond Road. According to Suffolk County Police, Trombly was struck by a westbound 2023 Honda CRV. The driver, a 42-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station, immediately stopped and cooperated with authorities.
Trombly was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver was unharmed. The Honda was impounded for a safety inspection as part of a routine investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department's Vehicular Crime Unit.
While the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed, the accident has reignited discussions within the community about the dangers of crossing major roads like Middle Country Road, especially at night. Residents have long voiced concerns about inadequate lighting and a lack of crosswalks in certain stretches, making it difficult for pedestrians to safely navigate the area.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555. The community mourns the loss of Robert Trombly, and the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance for both drivers and pedestrians on our local roads.
