Man Brandishing Sword Shot And Tased By Officers On Long Island: Police

BAY SHORE, NY - A man brandishing a large sword was shot by Suffolk County police officers after he advanced on them, refusing commands to drop the weapon. The incident, which unfolded in North Bay Shore on Tuesday afternoon, began with a 911 call from the man himself, who claimed to be holding hostages.

According to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina, officers responded to a home on Ohio Avenue after receiving the call. The 33-year-old male, who police say has a history of mental illness, met the officers at the door with a large sword. He allegedly unsheathed the weapon and began advancing toward the officers, ignoring their repeated orders to drop it.

In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, one officer deployed a taser, but it had no effect on the man. As he continued to move toward them, officers fired their weapons, striking him and causing him to fall to the ground. The man was then rushed to South Shore University Hospital for surgery. His condition is not yet known.

Commissioner Catalina confirmed that there were no hostages in the home, and that the man made suicidal statements after being shot. The entire incident was captured on body camera footage. The two officers involved were taken to the hospital and treated for trauma.

Neighbors reported hearing several shots. One neighbor, Kevin Velez, said he saw police running and then the man on the ground.

This is not the first time Long Island police have been involved in a similar incident. In October 2023, a man was fatally shot by Suffolk County police in Elwood after he charged at them with two fencing swords while wearing a fencing mask. That incident, which also involved a taser that was ineffective, was deemed a justified shooting by authorities.
