LONG ISLAND, NY — Every animal deserves to know what it feels like to be safe, cared for and loved. Unfortunately, some dogs and cats spend far too much of their lives waiting for that opportunity.

For animals who have been abandoned, neglected, injured, surrendered or simply overlooked, rescue organizations can become the bridge between an uncertain past and a much brighter future.

Road to Home Rescue Support is one of the organizations working to build that bridge.

Based on Long Island, Road to Home Rescue Support works to help dogs and cats in need by giving them an opportunity to heal, find stability and ultimately be placed with families who will love them.

But rescue is about much more than finding an animal a home.

Sometimes an animal first needs medical treatment. Sometimes they need training, patience or time to learn to trust people again. Others simply need a temporary foster home where they can feel safe while waiting for the right adopter.

That is why the people behind animal rescue — volunteers, fosters, adopters, donors and supporters — are so important.

Some Animals Just Need Someone to Believe in Them

The animals who need rescue are not always the easiest ones to place.

Senior pets can be passed over for younger animals. Dogs and cats with medical needs may require additional care. Some animals arrive frightened or unsure of people because of what they have experienced.

For the animals waiting in rescue, adoption means finally reaching the destination everyone has been working toward.

It means no more uncertainty.

It means having a bed that will still be there tomorrow, a familiar voice calling their name and people who consider them part of the family.

People considering adding a pet to their household are encouraged to look beyond puppies and kittens and consider adult and senior animals as well.

The perfect companion may be the animal who has been waiting the longest for someone to notice them.

You Can Help Even If You Cannot Adopt

Not everyone is in a position to bring another animal into their home, but that does not mean they cannot help.

Rescue organizations depend on communities.

Fostering, volunteering, donating supplies, contributing toward veterinary expenses, attending fundraisers and sharing animals who need homes can all make a difference.

Even something as simple as sharing an adoption post matters.

You may not be the person who adopts that animal, but someone on your friends list might be.

One share can reach one person — and one person can change an animal’s entire life.
