Wrong Way: Officer Nabs Drunk Driver On Smithtown Roadway After Award From MADD, Police Say
According to officials, a police officer from Long Island is being commended for apprehending a drunk motorist driving in the opposite direction on a road while returning home subsequent to receiving recognition from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
According to authorities, the occurrence took place at approximately 7 p.m. on May 2nd, Tuesday, along Route 347 in Smithtown.
While driving in a marked police vehicle while off-duty, Eric Noens, an officer with Suffolk County Police, allegedly observed Marisa Soares, who is 66 years old, driving in the wrong direction on Route 347, specifically heading westward in the eastbound lanes close to Mount Pleasant Road.
Soares, who resides in East Northport, was apprehended for allegedly operating a vehicle while suffering from diminished driving capabilities due to the influence of drugs and alcohol.
On Wednesday, May 3, her arraignment was planned to take place at the First District Court located in Central Islip.
Noens, who is a part of the Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Section of the department, was on his way back home when the incident occurred. He had just received a unit recognition award for his effective enforcement against impaired driving from MADD.
As per its website, the nonprofit organization is committed to putting a stop to drunk driving, combating drugged driving, and hindering underage drinking.
