Deadly Failed Robbery of Suffolk Teen Ends in Decades-Long Prison Sentence

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — A Central Islip man has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison for the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Bay Shore resident during what prosecutors described as a planned armed robbery.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney announced that Erick Garcia, 22, received the sentence after admitting his role in the 2022 killing of Carlos Guillen. Garcia pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, avoiding a trial while accepting responsibility for the deadly encounter.

According to investigators, Garcia arranged to meet Guillen with the intention of robbing him. Once inside Guillen’s vehicle, Garcia allegedly pulled out a handgun and attempted to steal from him. Prosecutors said Guillen tried to drive away to escape, but Garcia fired a shot that struck the young man before fleeing from the vehicle.

Although seriously wounded, Guillen was able to call 911 for help. Emergency responders located him shortly afterward, but he died from his injuries.

Authorities said Garcia left New York following the shooting but was later located, arrested, and returned to Suffolk County to face prosecution.

The court sentenced Garcia to 25 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.

District Attorney Tierney said the sentence holds Garcia accountable for a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of a young Long Island resident. While no sentence can undo the loss suffered by Guillen’s family and loved ones, officials said they hope the outcome provides a measure of justice.

The case serves as another reminder of the tragic consequences that can result when violent crimes escalate, leaving families and communities forever changed.
