Good Samaritan Rescues Kayaker on Long Island Sound, Police Say
NORTH FORK, NY — A 77-year-old kayaker was rescued by a good Samaritan after capsizing in the Long Island Sound off Terry Lane in Orient Saturday morning, Southold Town police said.
The incident unfolded around 10:30 a.m. when Spiros Roumandzas of Greenport fell from his kayak and was unable to get back in, police said. By the time officers arrived, a nearby good Samaritan in a rowboat had safely pulled him from the water.
Roumandzas was safely brought to shore by the good Samaritan and declined medical treatment from the Orient Fire Department, police said. He was wearing proper flotation gear at the time. No further action was taken.
