Suffolk County SPCA Offering Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic in Smithtown on September 13

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. — Suffolk County residents will have an opportunity to protect their pets against rabies at no cost when the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals hosts a free rabies vaccination clinic on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

The clinic, held in partnership with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Suffolk County SPCA office at the William J. Lindsay Complex, 725 Veterans Memorial Highway, Building 16, Smithtown.

Free rabies vaccinations will be available for dogs, cats and ferrets belonging to Suffolk County residents. Vaccines will be administered while supplies last, so residents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity.

Requirements for Pets

Dogs, cats and ferrets must be older than four months to receive a vaccination.

Dogs must be kept on leashes, and aggressive dogs must be muzzled. Cats and ferrets must be safely confined in carriers.

The clinic comes as health and animal-welfare officials continue to stress the importance of rabies prevention.

Rabies is a serious viral disease affecting mammals, including humans. The virus can be transmitted to people through the bite of an infected animal. Wild animals such as raccoons, bats and skunks are among the animals commonly associated with rabies transmission.

According to information provided by the Suffolk County SPCA, 20 cases of rabies have been reported in Suffolk County in 2026.

Vaccinating domestic animals is an important defense against the disease and helps protect both pets and the people who come into contact with them.

New York State law requires domestic dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies after reaching four months of age.

Residents are also urged to avoid contact with wild animals and report animals displaying suspicious or abnormal behavior to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

“Prevention is the first line of defense against rabies,” the Suffolk County SPCA emphasized in announcing the clinic.
