Adopt, Don’t Shop: Long Island Pets Are Waiting for Their Forever Homes

Across Long Island, dogs and cats are waiting in shelters, rescues and foster homes for something many of us take for granted — a place to call home.

Some arrived as strays. Others were surrendered when their families could no longer care for them. Some have endured neglect, abandonment or circumstances they never could have understood.

And some have simply been waiting far too long for someone to notice them.

For families considering adding a pet to their household, Long Island Daily News is encouraging residents to consider adoption and give a homeless animal the second chance it deserves.

Long Island Has Animals Waiting for Homes

Long Island is fortunate to have municipal shelters, nonprofit organizations, independent rescues, foster-based groups and dedicated volunteers working every day to save animals and connect them with loving families.

Organizations serving our communities include Brookhaven Animal Shelter & Adoption Center, Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue, Kent Animal Shelter, Almost Home Animal Rescue & Adoption, Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter, Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center, Last Hope Animal Rescue, Babylon Animal Shelter, Islip Animal Shelter & Adopt-a-Pet Center, North Shore Animal League America, Hope For Cleo Animal Rescue, Northport Cat Rescue Association, Tender Loving Cats, New York Bully Crew, Ruff House Rescue and many others throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Behind every shelter and rescue name are individual animals with individual stories.

There are young dogs bursting with energy and older dogs who would be perfectly happy spending their days beside someone on the couch.

There are playful kittens and adult cats whose personalities are already established.

There are senior animals who have spent years in homes and suddenly find themselves living in unfamiliar surroundings.

There are bonded animals hoping they will not have to lose each other in addition to everything else they have lost.

And there are long-term shelter residents who have watched other animals leave while they continue waiting.

They don’t need perfection.

They need a chance.

Why Adoption Matters

When someone adopts from a shelter or rescue, the impact can extend beyond the life of the animal being brought home.

An adoption can open valuable space for another animal in need. It can allow a foster family to take in another dog or cat. It can give rescuers the opportunity to say “yes” when the next urgent call comes.

Most importantly, it gives one animal something every companion animal deserves: safety, stability and a family of its own.

Choosing adoption also gives families an opportunity to speak with shelter staff, rescue volunteers and foster families who may already know a great deal about an animal’s personality, behavior and needs.

The right pet is not necessarily the youngest, smallest or first animal someone sees.

Sometimes the perfect match is the quiet adult dog sitting patiently in the back of a kennel.

Sometimes it’s the senior cat who only wants a warm bed and someone nearby.

Sometimes it’s the animal everyone else has walked past.

Can’t Adopt? You Can Still Help

Adoption isn’t possible for everyone, but adopting is only one way Long Islanders can help.

Fostering can provide an animal with a temporary home while freeing valuable shelter or rescue space. Donations can help organizations pay for food, veterinary care, medications and supplies. Volunteers can walk dogs, socialize cats, assist at adoption events, transport animals and help with countless other needs.

And there is another form of help that costs nothing: sharing an adoptable animal’s story.

A Facebook share, community-group post or text to a friend may seem insignificant.

For an animal waiting for a home, it could be the connection that changes everything.

The person who sees that post may be the person who has been looking for that exact dog or cat.

Long Island Daily News Wants to Help

Long Island Daily News is committed to using our community platform to help Long Island’s homeless animals get seen.

We invite animal shelters, rescue organizations, foster families and animal advocates throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties to send us information about animals needing homes.

We especially want to hear about long-term shelter residents, senior animals, bonded pairs, urgent cases and dogs and cats who aren’t receiving the attention they deserve.

Submissions should include a clear photograph, the animal’s name, approximate age, personality and background when available, adoption requirements, the name of the shelter or rescue and information explaining how interested adopters can apply.

Long Island Daily News will continue highlighting animals and the people working tirelessly to save them because every adoption begins with someone seeing an animal and deciding to give that animal a chance.

Ask about the animals who have been there the longest.

Ask about the seniors.

Ask about the ones who keep getting overlooked.

You may walk through the door believing you’re going to rescue an animal.

You might walk out realizing that animal has changed your life, too.

Adopt. Foster. Volunteer. Donate. Share.

Because until they all have homes, we’ll keep sharing their stories.
