10 Residents Displaced After Fire Damages Massapequa Park Home

MASSAPEQUA PARK, NY — Ten people, including five children, are temporarily without their home after a fire caused extensive damage to a Massapequa Park residence Tuesday evening.

Firefighters were called to a home on East Lake Avenue at approximately 8:18 p.m. on September 1 after reports of a fire at the property.

According to fire officials, the blaze began in an attached garage.

Everyone inside the home was able to get out safely before firefighters arrived. Five adults and five children were living at the residence.

No residents or firefighters were injured.

The Massapequa Fire Department responded to the scene and was joined by firefighters from several neighboring departments as crews worked to contain the flames.

Approximately 80 firefighters from five departments ultimately took part in the response, including personnel from Massapequa, Amityville, Bethpage, North Massapequa and Seaford.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within approximately one hour.

Although everyone escaped safely, the fire left enough damage that the house could no longer be occupied.

The 10 displaced residents are expected to stay with relatives while they are unable to return home.

Fire officials also reported that the home’s smoke detectors were in place and activated during the emergency.

The Village of Massapequa Park Building Department was called to evaluate the condition of the residence following the fire.

The incident serves as another reminder of how quickly a residential fire can force a family from its home — and of the importance of working smoke detectors and having a way to safely evacuate during an emergency.

In this case, despite the significant damage to the property, all 10 residents made it out safely.
