A man from Long Island who was indicted for a fatal supermarket shooting has been found guilty and may spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury deliberated for less than six hours.
According to the Nassau County District Attorney, a Hempstead resident, Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, who is 33-years-old, was convicted on Wednesday, May 3 for committing murder of a Stop & Shop supervisor and for attempting to kill his two coworkers.
The sentence that he might receive could be a maximum of 90 years, with the possibility of life in prison.
According to the testimony presented during the trial, Wilson, an employee of Stop & Shop at the time, went into the West Hempstead grocery store on April 20, 2021, at around 11:19 a.m. with a weapon and proceeded to the employee offices on the second floor.
Subsequently, he entered the office of the store manager and proceeded to shoot an individual in the face and fired two shots at their chest.
According to the report from the DA's Office, Wilson proceeded to shoot a manager of the opposite gender in the shoulder, and the bullet left her body through her back. He then went into another office and shot Raymond Wishropp, a manager who was 49 years old, with several bullets.
Wishropp sustained fatal injuries to his chest and leg, resulting in his death at the scene.
According to District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly, Gabriel Wilson, a dissatisfied employee, arrived at the West Hempstead Stop and Shop carrying a semi-automatic gun and the motive to murder.
During his lunch break, Raymond Wishropp, the grocery manager, was eating a sandwich when he was approached by the perpetrator who shot him in the chest at close range.
Wilson was arrested the same day, at around 3:50 p.m.
In all, Wilson was convicted of the following charges:
- Second-degree murder
- Second-degree attempted murder, two counts
- First-degree assault, two counts
- Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts
According to the District Attorney, he was found not guilty of two charges of attempting to commit second-degree murder.
On Thursday, June 8, Wilson has to go back to court for sentencing.
