Long Island Man Killed When Firework Explodes in His Face During Fourth of July Party

Coram, N.Y. — July 5, 2026
A Fourth of July celebration in Suffolk County turned tragic late Saturday night when a 32‑year‑old Coram man was killed after a firework detonated directly in his face, according to Suffolk County Police.

The incident occurred just after 10:15 p.m. at a backyard gathering on Pine Street, where friends and neighbors had assembled for holiday festivities. Witnesses told investigators the man was attempting to light a large aerial firework when it malfunctioned, exploding instantly and causing catastrophic injuries.

Partygoers called 911 immediately, and first responders from the Selden Fire Department arrived within minutes. Despite emergency efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors described a chaotic moment of screams and confusion as smoke filled the yard. Several attendees were treated for shock, though no additional physical injuries were reported.

Police said the firework involved was not legal for consumer use in New York, and detectives are investigating where it was obtained. New York State law prohibits most aerial and explosive fireworks, allowing only limited ground‑based sparkling devices.

Officials emphasized that illegal fireworks remain a persistent danger during holiday weekends. “These devices are unpredictable, powerful, and can be deadly,” a Suffolk County fire marshal said Sunday. “This is exactly the kind of tragedy we try to prevent every year.”

The victim’s name has not yet been released pending family notification.

Authorities are urging residents to attend professional fireworks shows and avoid handling any devices not explicitly permitted under state law. The investigation is ongoing.
