Nearly All Cybertrucks Recalled Over Flying Panels

Tesla has issued a major recall impacting nearly all Cybertrucks currently on U.S. roads, following reports that stainless steel body panels can detach while the vehicle is in motion.
According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 13,000 Cybertrucks delivered between November 2023 and March 2025 are affected. The issue involves a faulty adhesive used to secure the vehicle’s distinctive exoskeleton panels. Under certain driving or weather conditions, the panels can loosen—or in some cases—fly off entirely.
“This is a serious safety concern. Any large piece of metal detaching at highway speeds can pose a major hazard,” said NHTSA spokesperson Claire Andrews. “Tesla is working with us to address it swiftly.”
The recall follows weeks of viral posts from Cybertruck owners who noticed missing or flapping body panels. Initially brushed off as isolated incidents or cosmetic defects, the growing number of reports led Tesla to launch an internal investigation.
Tesla confirmed the problem and has temporarily paused Cybertruck deliveries while implementing a fix on the production line. Owners have been notified via the Tesla app and over-the-air (OTA) updates. Unlike many of Tesla’s remote software fixes, this repair will require a visit to a service center.
Cybertruck panels will be removed and reattached using a new adhesive compound, along with additional mechanical fasteners to ensure long-term stability.
While no crashes or injuries have been reported, Tesla is urging all owners to schedule service appointments as soon as possible.
For drivers on Long Island, the closest Tesla Service Centers are located in Smithtown and Brooklyn, with appointments available via the Tesla app.
This marks the second significant recall for the Cybertruck since its highly anticipated release in late 2023. In January, Tesla recalled several units over a windshield wiper motor malfunction.
Despite its bold design and massive preorder numbers, the Cybertruck has faced scrutiny over quality control and road-readiness. Analysts say these early issues aren’t unusual for a new platform but could impact customer confidence if problems persist.
