On Thursday, April 20, the Suffolk County District Attorney declared that Jhonny Chavarria-Argueta from Bay Shore had admitted to the accusations made against him.

Jessica Gonzalez, a 19-year-old resident of Commack, lost her life in the September 2022 incident when the car she was riding in lost control and she was ejected, as Chavarria-Argueta was the driver.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said that the reckless behavior of the accused, who drove under the influence and exceeded the speed limit, caused the untimely death of a helpless female passenger in his car.

Even following the crash, the accused's self-centered behavior persisted as he opted not to provide assistance and fled in a pusillanimous attempt to evade being apprehended by the authorities.

Based on both his confession and court records, Chavarria-Argueta was behind the wheel of a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe that he had rented following the consumption of alcohol.

While traveling towards the east on Southern State Parkway, he lost command of his vehicle and collided with the median guardrail.

After flipping numerous times, the vehicle eventually landed on its front against the Robert Moses Causeway overpass, close to Exit 40.

Chavarria-Argueta exited the vehicle and escaped on foot, leaving Gonzales behind to succumb to her injuries.

In all, he pleaded guilty to the following charges:

  • Second-degree manslaughter;
  • Second-degree vehicular manslaughter;
  • Leaving the scene of an incident without reporting; and
  • Driving while intoxicated

On Thursday, June 1, Chavarria-Argueta is scheduled to appear in court and could potentially receive a prison sentence ranging from four to 12 years.
