Bad Apple: LI Woman Wires $4K To Phone Scammer Posing As Tech Support
According to Nassau County Police, a virus appeared on the computer of a woman from Thomaston at roughly 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 6.
According to reports, the woman searched for "Apple Support" on Google and dialed a phone number that appeared in the results.
According to the police, she conversed with an unfamiliar man who introduced himself as "Apple Support" and guided her to download an application named AnyDesk.
Through AnyDesk, a user can gain remote access to a different device.
According to reports, the victim was directed by the fraudster to access her Zelle and Venmo accounts and transfer $4,000 to an unknown individual.
Authorities said that shortly afterward, the woman became suspicious and contacted 911.
The inquiry is still underway.
The community is being encouraged by the Nassau County Police Department to stay vigilant against potential scams and to advise vulnerable contacts about the possibility of fraud.
