Stop & Shop to Donate $10,000 to Suffolk County Community College Food Pantries

SELDEN, N.Y. — Stop & Shop will donate $10,000 to Suffolk County Community College to support food pantries serving students across the college’s three campuses, helping provide food and other essentials to students experiencing food insecurity.

The donation will be formally presented Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. during an oversized check presentation at the food pantry on Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus, located at 533 College Road in Selden.

The $10,000 contribution will be provided through Stop & Shop gift cards and will benefit food pantries at the Ammerman Campus in Selden, the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood and the Eastern Campus in Riverhead.

The assistance is intended to help students obtain nutritious food and other necessities while allowing them to concentrate on their education rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from.

Food Insecurity Among College Students

Suffolk County Community College serves approximately 26,000 students across its three campuses, according to information provided by the college and Stop & Shop. Nearly 37% of the college’s students receive Pell Grants, federal grants generally awarded to undergraduate students who demonstrate significant financial need.

For students already balancing tuition, transportation, textbooks, housing and other expenses, access to food can become another financial challenge.

Campus food pantries can provide an important safety net by making food and essential resources available to students who need additional support.

Suffolk County Community College has a long history of addressing the issue.

The college operates food pantries at all three of its campuses, and its Brentwood pantry at the Michael J. Grant Campus holds a particularly significant place in New York’s higher-education history. According to the college, the Brentwood location was the first college food pantry established in New York State and has served students since the 1970s.

Supporting Students Across Suffolk County

Tuesday’s event will take place inside the Ammerman Campus food pantry, where students and faculty are expected to participate in the presentation. Students will also be able to use the pantry during the event.

The donation comes as food insecurity remains an important issue for college students, particularly those managing school alongside work and other financial responsibilities.

By supporting the college’s existing pantry network, the $10,000 donation will reach students in communities across Suffolk County — from Selden and Brentwood to Riverhead.
