Could Suffolk County Do the Same? Long Island Daily News Calls for a Countywide Pet Supply Drive

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. — A recent Nassau County pet-supply drive collected more than 450 pounds of food and other necessities for animals in need.

Now Long Island Daily News is asking a simple question:

Could Suffolk County do the same?

From large municipal shelters to small foster-based rescues, TNR volunteers and independent animal advocates, organizations throughout Suffolk County depend heavily on community support.

Food is needed.

Cat litter is needed.

Cleaning supplies are needed.

Fosters are needed.

Adopters are needed

Other supplies needed

And veterinary expenses continue to place tremendous pressure on rescue organizations.

Suffolk County already has organizations working to address these needs.

Long Island Cares operates Baxter’s Pet Pantry, which helps provide pet food and supplies to families facing financial hardship in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Its Lindenhurst location provides assistance by appointment, while pet food is also distributed through participating member agencies when supplies are available.

But the need extends beyond pet owners experiencing financial hardship.

Animal shelters, independent rescues, community-cat caretakers and foster families also rely on donations to continue their work.

Imagine What Suffolk County Could Accomplish

What if Suffolk County residents, businesses, libraries, schools, elected officials and community organizations came together for one coordinated drive?

Collection boxes could be established throughout the county.

Residents could donate unopened dog and cat food, canned food, cat litter and other items specifically requested by participating organizations.

Local businesses could serve as collection points.

Schools and civic organizations could organize individual drives.

And the supplies could be distributed among participating Suffolk County shelters and nonprofit rescue organizations.

One bag of food may not seem like much.

Neither does one case of canned cat food.

But Nassau County’s recent drive demonstrated what happens when individual donations are combined.

They become hundreds of pounds of help.

We Want Suffolk County Rescues to Tell Us What They Need

Before asking the public to donate, we want to hear directly from the organizations doing the work.

Long Island Daily News is inviting Suffolk County animal shelters, nonprofit rescues, TNR organizations and other established animal-welfare groups to contact us with their current supply needs.

Tell us:

What supplies do you need most?

Do you accept food donations?

Do you need cat litter?

Do you need puppy or kitten supplies?

Do you need towels, blankets, carriers or cleaning supplies?

Do you have an official wish list?

Where can donations be dropped off?

And would your organization participate in a larger Suffolk County pet-supply drive?

We want to compile that information so Long Islanders who want to help know exactly where their donations can make a difference.

Residents and Businesses Can Help, Too

We also want to hear from Suffolk County businesses and community organizations interested in helping.

Would your business host a collection box?

Would your library, school or civic organization organize a donation drive?

Would you volunteer to transport donated supplies?

Would you help promote the effort?

If enough of Suffolk County comes together, hundreds — perhaps thousands — of pounds of supplies could potentially reach animals and organizations that need them.

Let’s Make This Bigger Than One Story

Long Island Daily News doesn’t want to simply report that animal rescues need help.

We want to help connect the people willing to give with the organizations that need them.

So we’re putting the call out to Suffolk County.

Rescues and shelters: Tell us what you need.

Businesses and community organizations: Tell us if you’re willing to help collect it.

Residents: Tell us you’re ready to donate.

Let’s see what Suffolk County can accomplish when an entire community comes together for its animals.
