Wegmans has recently initiated the hiring and training process for the much-anticipated opening of its inaugural supermarket on Long Island. The 95,000-square-foot store, situated at DSW Plaza on the southeast corner of Middle Country Road and Moriches Road, is currently undergoing construction in preparation for its grand unveiling. The strategic location promises convenience and accessibility for residents in the Lake Grove area.

Anticipation is building as the supermarket is projected to open its doors in early 2025, bringing a diverse range of grocery options and services to the local community. The Lake Grove Wegmans is not only poised to enhance the retail landscape but also contribute significantly to the local job market. According to a recent company statement, the supermarket aims to employ over 500 individuals, offering a substantial number of job opportunities in various roles.

As the construction progresses and the opening date approaches, the recruitment and training efforts signify Wegmans' commitment to providing quality service and creating a positive impact on the Long Island community. The supermarket's expansion to this new location not only reflects its continued growth but also reinforces its dedication to delivering exceptional experiences for both customers and employees alike.

Wegmans has launched its online application process for a variety of positions, spanning from entry-level roles to management, and encompassing full-time opportunities across every department, including culinary positions. In a bid to facilitate the hiring process, the supermarket chain will organize an in-person hiring event exclusively for full-time positions on Thursday, March 21, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Lake Grove Hiring Office, located at 2780 Middle Country Road, Suite 140 in Lake Grove.

Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to submit their applications online in advance of the event, utilizing the company's application portal at jobs.wegmans.com. However, the store recognizes the importance of accommodating walk-in applicants, offering on-the-spot interviews during the event. Wegmans is actively seeking individuals who are enthusiastic about people and food to fill approximately 500 new job positions in the Lake Grove community.

Expressing excitement about the upcoming venture, Lake Grove Store Manager Dawn Cooper conveyed in a statement, "We are thrilled to be opening Wegmans in the vibrant and welcoming community of Lake Grove in 2025. We look forward to getting to know the community, supporting local initiatives, and creating a positive impact." Cooper emphasized the company's commitment to providing paid training at one of their existing stores as part of the preparation for the Wegmans Lake Grove opening.

Wegmans' journey to establish a presence on Long Island has been marked by careful consideration and strategic decisions. Initial efforts in 2015 and 2016 involved signing letters of intent and engaging in lease negotiations for various retail spaces in Nassau and Suffolk counties, including potential locations in Holbrook, Huntington, Yaphank, and the former Sears property in Hicksville. However, the family-owned chain withdrew from those deals, reevaluating its approach.

After successfully opening stores in Brooklyn and Manhattan, Wegmans eventually secured its Long Island foothold in the previous year. The acquisition of an 8.5-acre development site in Lake Grove marked a significant milestone. The grocery chain invested $15.3 million in the purchase from Prestige Properties & Development, the owner of DSW Plaza.

Founded in 1916 by brothers John and Walter Wegman as the Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Company, Wegmans has evolved into a prominent regional supermarket chain known as Wegmans Food Markets. With a rich history and commitment to quality, the chain achieved a revenue of approximately $12 billion in 2023, as reported by Forbes. Currently boasting more than 53,000 employees, Wegmans operates 110 stores across New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Delaware, and North Carolina, reinforcing its status as a key player in the grocery retail industry.
