Long Island, NY — January 21, 2025
A tragic fire at the North Shore Animal Shelter in Huntington sparked an overwhelming wave of community support over the weekend. The blaze, which broke out late Friday night, destroyed part of the facility, displacing nearly 40 animals. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, thanks to the quick response of staff and local firefighters.
Shelter director Margaret Lawson called the event “heartbreaking,” but expressed gratitude for the swift evacuation efforts. “Our team worked tirelessly to ensure the animals’ safety. We’re devastated by the damage, but the community’s support has given us hope.”
In the aftermath, local residents and businesses rallied to aid the shelter. By Saturday morning, donations of food, blankets, and supplies were pouring in. A GoFundMe campaign, launched to cover repair costs and temporary housing for the animals, raised over $50,000 within 24 hours.
Volunteer firefighter and local resident Jason Reed described the scene as “chaotic but inspiring.” He added, “Seeing everyone come together to help shows the strength of our community.”
While investigators are still determining the cause of the fire, the shelter has temporarily relocated the animals to nearby facilities and foster homes. Volunteers are working around the clock to ensure the displaced pets receive care and attention.
Lawson is optimistic about the future: “We will rebuild, stronger than ever, and continue our mission to provide a safe haven for animals in need.”
The North Shore Animal Shelter is accepting donations online and at a temporary drop-off location in Huntington Station. For more information on how to help, visit their website or social media pages.
