Holbrook Nurse Allegedly Slams Baby Face Down, Arrested, Charged: DA
As per the statements of Suffolk County District Attorney, Raymond A. Tierney, Amanda Burke, aged 29 and hailing from Holbrook, was serving at the NICU Unit of the Good Samaritan Hospital situated in West Islip when the occurrence transpired.
Her duty was to attend to a newborn who was two days old.
Burke approached the bassinet where the little baby lay.
The District Attorney stated that she immediately raised and turned the infant before forcefully placing him face-down onto the bassinet.
The father of the infant purportedly filmed the event using his cell phone from outside the nursery window. He then showed the video to the mother of the child who confronted Burke, although the details of the confrontation are uncertain.
The nursing staff at Good Samaritan was informed of Burke's actions by the couple.
The DA alleged that Burke was immediately dismissed from her job and asked to leave the hospital after the incident.
Tierney expressed deep concern over the accusations against the defendant, who holds a position of responsibility for taking care of our most defenseless individuals.
Although reported to the New York State’s Department of Education’s Office of Professional Discipline, her ability to work as a registered nurse has not yet been suspended.
The accusation against Burke is that he put a child's wellbeing in danger.
On Wednesday, April 12, she turned herself in to the police and is set to appear in court again on Tuesday, May 2.
