A church that had stood for 150 years in Central Islip, Suffolk County was destroyed by fire.
The destruction of their historic church has left a Suffolk County community grieving. The 150-year-old building was consumed by flames on Sunday morning.
At approximately 2 a.m., a fire of multiple alarms occurred at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah on Carleton Avenue in Central Islip.
According to investigators, the fire started in the basement of the church and rapidly progressed to the higher floors.
Footage captured at the site demonstrated that the smokey inferno was contested by firefighters from seven distinct fire departments who struggled to suppress the flames from both the roof and the interior of the building until they gained control of the situation.
There were no injuries, but the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island stated that the fire resulted in "devastating destruction due to fire, heat, and water."
On Sunday, Bishop Lawrence C. Provenzano of Long Island gathered with church members on the lawn to pray and discuss future plans. Upon arrival for the Sunday morning worship service, Boyd Coley was unaware of the fire.
Coley informed Eyewitness News that he arrived prepared to render his services in a suit, only to find everyone standing outdoors without proper attire. When he looked up, he observed the extent of the damage and was taken aback. However, despite this setback, the congregation remains optimistic about their future and intends to utilize another structure on the property until reconstruction is possible.
