AMITYVILLE, NY — A 33-year-old Bay Shore man has been arrested and charged with first-degree assault after police say a 65-year-old man was stabbed in the neck during a meeting inside an Amityville church Friday night.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, the stabbing occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11, in the basement of First United Methodist Church, 25 Broadway in Amityville.
Police allege Daniel Escobar, 33, of Bay Shore, stabbed the 65-year-old victim in the neck during the meeting and then fled the scene. (Suffolk County Police Department)
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said. (Suffolk County Police Department)
Suspect Located in Bay Shore
Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives launched an investigation following the stabbing.
Police said investigators located Escobar on Ackerson Boulevard in Bay Shore, where he was taken into custody at approximately 10:22 p.m., less than two hours after the stabbing. (Suffolk County Police Department)
Escobar was charged with Assault in the First Degree and was held overnight at the Suffolk County Police Department’s First Precinct.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Saturday, September 12, at First District Court in Central Islip. (Suffolk County Police Department)
Police have not publicly released additional details about what allegedly led to the stabbing or the nature of the meeting taking place inside the church.
The investigation was handled by Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives.
A criminal charge is an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
