Spotted Lantern Flies have a new home in Long Island

During this eventful and heated summer, did you happen to see an insect that was much larger than a ladybug hibernating in your backyard? It is indeed a Spotted Lantern fly! These creatures are supposedly very harmful to the environment as they destroy trees and forests which are main habitats for other insects in the United States. From their origin in South Korea and Japan, Long Island has had a surplus of infestations from them currently in the summertime. Individuals who experience this sight anywhere are told to kill these immediately to prevent destruction to the agriculture around them. Certain methods to get rid of them are to use sticky traps and physical removal. Wether you are having a barbecue to finish off this summer, or are enjoying a meal with a sunset nearby, I can tell you that a bunch of flies and bees being stuck on a paper is not the most flattering view. With some bug sprays being ineffective, it is important to be extra cautious in case you want to play "connect the dots" with your bites. A new tool that I seem to be using nowadays is called "Bug Bite Thing". This tool is considered to be highly effective as it removes the venom from any bite to repel swelling and redness. Overall, it is highly likely that we cannot FULLY avoid insects and their need to spread around the world. These tips and reminders are important to know in case of an emergency. I hope everybody's summer is wrapping up nicely and to enjoy each day as the cool weather is on the horizon. Be aware, have fun, and to hopefully catch the "Mister Softee Truck" for ice cream. I hear he drives by around 5pm during dinnertime. Happy Friday!!
