As of 6 a.m. on April 1, it was reported by the Riverhead Police that a student from Riverhead High School was taken into custody yesterday after being found with over 12 unattached .22 bullets while at school. According to the police, there is no indication that any firearm or weapon was discovered on the school's premises.
According to the police, the 14-year-old boy claimed that he discovered the ammunition on a shelf at his brother's workplace.
According to the police press release, after conducting an investigation, it was found that the student's family member legally possesses a .22-caliber rifle that is kept in a secure location away from the student's house.
According to the police, the student who had bullets in school handed one of them over to another student, who subsequently gave it to a security guard.
Yesterday afternoon, the school Superintendent Augustine Tornatore announced in a letter on the district website that a stray bullet had been discovered in a hallway at the high school by a student who then reported it to the district administration. A second student later brought in another similar bullet to the administration office.
As stated by the superintendent, the school implemented a "hold-in-place" protocol while authorities searched for the student who brought bullets onto the premises.
According to the superintendent, the school was placed in a lockout state, in which the building is secured to prevent any external threats, and later reverted back to regular conditions.
The district confirmed that no students, faculty, or staff were ever in danger.
According to the police, the student who brought bullets to school was taken into custody, dealt with, and later discharged with an appearance ticket to attend Suffolk County Family Court. The charges that led to the arrest were not disclosed by the police.
