Jason McGlone, Assistant Chief of the East Branch Volunteer Fire Department in Delaware County, tragically lost his life while responding to a car crash on Route 30 Thursday night, July 17, the department confirmed.
McGlone, a Long Island native from South Huntington who had settled in East Branch, was among the first responders dispatched to the scene around 9:30 p.m., after reports of a vehicle striking a telephone pole.
In a tragic turn of events, officials said Assistant Chief Jason McGlone was electrocuted after his vehicle became entangled in a low-hanging wire while responding to the crash. The wire caused a short circuit that disrupted communications, and McGlone was fatally shocked as he exited the truck. Despite immediate CPR efforts by fellow responders, he could not be revived.
The East Branch Fire Department confirmed his death in a solemn statement Friday morning.
“It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the East Branch Fire Department announces the Line of Duty Death of 3rd Assistant Chief Jason McGlone,” the department wrote. “Please keep the McGlone family and the East Branch Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers.”
Local firefighters and police honored Assistant Chief Jason McGlone with a solemn escort, accompanying his body first to the fire station and then to Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe, where funeral arrangements are currently pending. A video of the emotional procession was widely shared on social media, as neighboring fire departments and community members paid tribute to the fallen hero.
News of Assistant Chief Jason McGlone’s tragic passing sparked an outpouring of heartfelt tributes across social media, as friends and fellow first responders mourned the loss of a beloved community member.
Rom Nimmo remembered McGlone as “a great friend and more like a brother to some,” echoing the deep bonds he formed with those around him.
Jessica Gilmore honored McGlone’s passion for cooking, posting a candid photo of him proudly standing beside a mobile smoker—a nod to the lighter moments that defined his generous spirit.
The tributes serve as a poignant reminder of the impact McGlone had both in and out of uniform.
“Not gonna lie, I am kinda pissed you won’t be cooking at this funeral,” Gilmore wrote in her tribute. “We hope they have extra salt in Heaven and one hell of a smoker, man.”
Jason McGlone is survived by his wife and two children. As of Friday, July 18, funeral service details had not yet been announced.
