Suffolk County detectives intercept $5,000 shipped as part of elder scam
The Financial Crimes Unit detectives of Suffolk County Police are currently looking into a fraudulent act where a woman from Pennsylvania sent money to a location within Suffolk County.
At 11:40 a.m. on April 26th, a package disguised as a gift, containing $5,000 in cash, was seized by detectives. The package was sent by an elderly woman residing in Olyphant, Pennsylvania. She claimed to have received a call instructing her to send the money to a Coram address.
The victim did not reveal the topic of their discussion or the reason for the caller's request for money. However, the money will be refunded to the victim.
The Financial Crimes Unit is requesting individuals who suspect they have fallen victim to a scam or have knowledge about one to contact them at 631-852-6821.
