A man who is believed to be a member of MS-13 has been sentenced to several decades in prison for shooting and killing someone from inside a taxi during an argument on Long Island.
On Thursday, March 23, Denis Gutierrez-Marcos, who is 20 years old, received a sentence of 20 years to life in prison in Nassau County Court after he admitted his guilt in the murder of Edwin Guerrero Hernandez, as well as other charges.
According to prosecutors, on September 6, 2020, Gutierrez-Marcos was a passenger in a taxi minivan on High Street in Hempstead along with two others. During the ride, an altercation occurred between a passenger in the front seat and a man seated in the back.
After the rear passenger exited the vehicle, he kept shouting at the front passenger. Gutierrez-Marcos, who was sitting in the backseat behind the driver at the time, then leaned forward and shot the man through the open window. He instructed the taxi driver to depart the vicinity.
The victim was shot in the left shoulder and fell back, as stated by investigators.
Hernandez, a friend of the victim, saw the shooting and ran after the taxi. Gutierrez-Marcos shot Hernandez through the open window when he tried to open the door.
Eventually, Hernandez passed away at the Nassau University Medical Center.
As per the prosecution, Gutierrez-Marcos engaged in another shooting incident in October 2020, where he shot at a group of individuals standing outside a residence on Jackson Street while in a moving vehicle. Two people were struck, one of whom sustained severe injuries that jeopardized their life. Fortunately, both individuals managed to survive the assault.
Until June 2021, he was running away from the scene and eventually got caught by the Nassau County Police Department Gang Squad.
Anne Donnelly, the District Attorney of Nassau County stated in a release that Denis Gutierrez-Marcos posed a significant threat to society, and his sentencing today alleviates the fear he instilled in our communities.
Gutierrez-Marcos admitted to three felony charges on Feb. 9, including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.
