An individual from Long Island has pleaded guilty to car theft that involved a sleeping young child and caused a collision with a guardrail while under the influence of alcohol, which may result in several years of imprisonment.

In Suffolk County Court on April 25th, Paul Ludeman, who is 56 years old and resides in Holtsville, pled guilty to several charges, one of which was endangering the welfare of a child. These charges were related to an incident that occurred in February 2023.

The Suffolk County DA's Office reported that Ludeman took a car with a sleeping 14-month-old child inside and drove off in Greenport on February 14, 2023, while under the influence of alcohol.

According to prosecutors, Ludeman was followed by a good Samaritan and the infant's grandmother who successfully rescued the toddler from the vehicle. Fortunately, the child did not suffer any injuries.

After stealing the car, Ludeman drove it further and eventually collided with a guardrail.

According to a statement from Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney, the accused showed a complete lack of concern for the law or others when he took a car with a baby in the backseat while drunk.

The incident had the potential to result in a catastrophic outcome. The defendant's careless behavior, which blatantly ignored the safety of the general public, has led to their reimprisonment.

In court Tuesday, Ludeman pleaded guilty to the following charges:

  • Third-degree grand larceny (felony)
  • Endangering the welfare of a child (misdemeanor)
  • Driving while ability impaired (misdemeanor)

On Tuesday, May 30, Ludeman is set to receive his sentence and may potentially serve a prison term ranging from two to four years.
