Police say an armed man carjacked a woman and then crashed into a police cruiser in Wheatley Heights.

After purportedly stealing a car from a woman on Long Island using a firearm and crashing into a police car, a 21-year-old man who was homeless was caught while fleeing on foot.

The occurrence transpired at Wheatley Heights, a designated village within the precinct of Babylon, at the hour of 11 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14th.

According to Suffolk County Police detectives, Kwaisi McCorvey, who is homeless, approached a 2016 Hyundai Tuscan as it was entering a driveway located on Main Avenue close to Sunset Avenue.

According to the police, McCorvey aimed a firearm at the driver, ordering her to exit the car, after which he took control of the Hyundai and fled from the scene.

Ten minutes later, the Hyundai was located at the intersection of Straight Path and Burr's Lane in Wyandanch by patrol officers who were in a police vehicle that had markings.

According to the police, the Hyundai was pursued by officers until it reached North 23rd Street in the vicinity of Merritt Avenue, at which point McCorvey intentionally collided the vehicle with the patrol car's passenger side.

After traveling for approximately three more blocks, he leaped out of the car and ran away on foot towards the nearby LIRR tracks.

According to police, McCorvey was chased on foot by officers and was caught at approximately 11:30 p.m.

The charges against McCorvey included robbery, the criminal use of a firearm, grand larceny, possessing a weapon illegally, menacing, criminal mischief, two charges of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and unlawfully fleeing a police officer while driving a vehicle.

After being detained overnight, his arraignment at Central Islip is set for Wednesday, March 15.
