An armed carjacker involved in a collision with a police cruiser in Wheatley Heights was apprehended after a brief pursuit.

Wheatley Heights-

An individual aged 21 years old who is homeless was apprehended after purportedly hijacking a woman from Long Island at gunpoint and striking a police vehicle before attempted to escape by running.

The event transpired in Wheatley Heights, a hamlet of Babylon, shortly after 11 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14.

Suffolk County Police detectives reported that Kwaisi McCorvey, an individual without a fixed address, approached a 2016 Hyundai Tuscan that had just arrived at a driveway located on Main Avenue, not far from Sunset Avenue.

McCorvey allegedly brandished a handgun towards the driver and instructed her to vacate the vehicle. Subsequently, McCorvey is purported to have entered the Hyundai and drove away, according to police reports.

Patrol officers in a marked police vehicle located the Hyundai after ten minutes at the intersection of Straight Path and Burr's Lane in Wyandanch.

The police reported that officers trailed the Hyundai to North 23rd Street, adjacent to Merritt Avenue, at which point McCorvey impacted the patrol car on the passenger side with the Hyundai.

He went another three blocks before leaving the car and running away to a close Long Island Rail Road track.

Police chased after McCorvey, getting him into custody at around 11:30 p.m., as reported.

He has been charged with robbery, the criminal use of a firearm, grand larceny, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, criminal mischief, two counts of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and the unlawful escape of a police officer in a vehicle.

He was held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned in Central Islip on Wednesday, March 15.
