Shortly after Riverhead school district trustee Laurie Downs made comments at a civic association meeting on March 18th, where she stated that many students walking home from school were being robbed and attacked, an incident occurred. However, the Riverhead Police Chief stated that the police department had not received any reports of such incidents. Downs suggested that Latino gangs were behind the attacks, causing controversy that led to her resignation from the school board. She sent a written statement via email, announcing her resignation this afternoon to the press.
