Two Firefighters Hurt While Battling Intense House Fire in Roslyn Heights

ROSLYN HEIGHTS — Two firefighters were injured Wednesday morning while battling a fast-moving house fire that tore through a home on Pinetree Lane in Roslyn Heights.

The blaze broke out around 9:45 a.m., sending thick smoke billowing through the residential neighborhood. Fire crews from several nearby departments rushed to the scene, where they found the two-story home engulfed in flames. All residents had escaped safely before firefighters arrived.

As crews worked to contain the inferno, one firefighter was seriously hurt after falling through the roof while attempting to ventilate the structure. Officials said he suffered burns to his face and upper body and was airlifted to the Weill Cornell Burn Center in Manhattan. A second firefighter who rushed in to help his fallen colleague was also injured but is expected to recover.

Firefighters spent nearly an hour bringing the blaze under control, battling intense heat and thick smoke. The home was left heavily damaged, its roof partially collapsed and interior gutted.

Investigators later determined that the cause of the fire was careless smoking, which ignited materials inside the home. Nassau County fire officials reminded residents to fully extinguish cigarettes and avoid smoking indoors.

Roslyn Heights Fire Chief [Name] praised his team’s bravery, noting that the quick action of firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to neighboring homes. “This incident is a reminder of the daily risks our first responders face,” he said. “We’re grateful both injured firefighters are alive and receiving excellent care.”

Neighbors described the scene as chaotic, with flames visible from blocks away and sirens echoing through the morning air. “It happened so fast,” one resident said. “The firefighters were incredible — they ran straight into danger.”

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the incident.

Authorities say both injured firefighters are in stable condition, and the department is offering counseling and support to those involved in the response.

Officials urge residents to practice fire safety at home: never leave smoking materials unattended, keep working smoke alarms on every floor, and plan an escape route for your family.
