In the midst of an active weather pattern marking the beginning of the new year, detailed projections for the first snowfall have been unveiled for a new storm system set to impact the Northeast.

Anticipated to make its arrival on Friday, January 19, the storm is projected to persist throughout the day and could extend into the evening hours.

AccuWeather.com forecasts a widespread snowfall ranging from 1 to 3 inches in the areas highlighted in sky blue on the provided image. There's a possibility of locally higher amounts in certain locations.

Western New York is likely to experience substantial snowfall, with the potential for up to 6 inches in accumulation as indicated by current projections.

Southern Pennsylvania and West Virginia, depicted in the darkest shade of blue, may witness significant accumulation, potentially up to a foot. Despite precipitation tapering off from the recent Monday night storm on Tuesday afternoon, January 16, conditions are expected to remain slippery. Additionally, areas further south might experience a transition to freezing rain.

The National Weather Service, in a midday Tuesday statement, indicated the possibility of sleet mixing in intermittently. Cautionary advice was given, highlighting the potential for untreated surfaces to become icy and slippery. Both pedestrians and motorists were urged to exercise extra caution, with drivers advised to reduce speed and maintain increased spacing between vehicles.

Expect a cold and sunny Wednesday, January 17, with high temperatures reaching only the mid-20s. Wind-chill values could drop into the single digits and teens. Clouds will make a comeback on Thursday, January 18, accompanied by a high temperature of around 30 degrees. The storm system on Friday is projected to exit by early Saturday morning, January 20, giving way to a mostly sunny and windy day with high temperatures reaching only the low 20s.
