HEAT ALERT: Dangerous heat, poor air quality and storm chances begin Wednesday
Long Island is gearing up for a stretch of dangerous summer weather beginning Wednesday, as forecasters warn of soaring temperatures, thick humidity, and worsening air quality that could last straight through the weekend.
Meteorologists say the region will be hit with a combination of high heat and poor air quality, creating conditions that may be hazardous for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Temperatures are expected to climb sharply by midday Wednesday, and with humidity surging, the air will feel even hotter than the actual readings.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions, noting that the mix of heat and pollution can be especially tough on children, older adults, and people with asthma or other respiratory issues. They recommend staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and checking on neighbors who may struggle in the heat.
The stagnant, tropical air mass settling over Long Island will also bring a chance for scattered thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and evening. While not widespread, any storm that develops could produce brief heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds.
Local emergency managers say cooling centers may open if temperatures climb into the danger zone, and they’re reminding residents to keep pets indoors and avoid leaving children or animals in vehicles even for a short time.
With several days of intense heat ahead, officials are encouraging Long Islanders to stay “heat smart” and plan for conditions that may feel more like the height of July than the start of the holiday week.
