Officers Rescue Teen Stuck in Mud in Wildlife Refuge
Suffolk County Police rescued a 15-year-old teen from Shirley Sunday night after he got stuck in the mud at the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge.
Officers responded to a 911 call reporting that a 15-year-old teenager was stuck in the mud at the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. at 7:27 p.m. The 15-year-old had reportedly gone for a walk in the woods, and could not find his way out after it got dark. While walking, he inadvertently stepped into an offshoot of Carman's River, sinking into the mud and becoming stuck.
Aviation Section officers flew a search route over above the river and while Moore was able to remain on the phone, and 911 Dispatch Center operators who helped direct officers and the helicopters to his position in the river. With assistance from the helicopter, officers on the ground were able to locate the 15-year-old and rescue him.
The 15-year-old from Shirley, was escorted out of the woods, and then transported via ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation.
