Long Island Braces for Steamy Week: Heat Advisory Issued Through Tuesday
LONG ISLAND, NY – Long Islanders should prepare for a significant heat wave this week, as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory for the region, warning of stifling temperatures and high humidity that will make it feel even hotter.
The Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 AM EDT on Monday, July 28th, until 8 PM EDT on Tuesday, July 29th. During this period, heat index values are expected to climb into the upper 90s to lower 100s Fahrenheit on Monday, potentially reaching as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday. The combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.
According to the NWS, a Heat Advisory is issued when the heat index is forecast to reach 95 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit for any length of time.
Forecast Breakdown:
* Monday, July 28th (Today): Expect sunny skies with a high near 91 degrees Fahrenheit. However, with the humidity, the heat index could feel as high as 99 degrees.
* Monday Night: Mostly clear with a low around 74 degrees Fahrenheit, offering little relief from the daytime heat.
* Tuesday, July 29th: Another sunny day with a high near 91 degrees Fahrenheit, but the heat index is forecast to be even more intense, potentially reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, with some areas possibly hitting 105 degrees.
* Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy with a low around 76 degrees Fahrenheit.
The NWS advises residents to take precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme heat. These include:
* Drink plenty of fluids: Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine.
* Stay in an air-conditioned environment: If you do not have air conditioning, seek out public cooling centers, libraries, or malls during the hottest parts of the day.
* Limit outdoor activities: If you must be outside, try to schedule activities during the cooler morning or evening hours. Take frequent breaks in the shade.
* Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing: Light-colored clothing can also help reflect sunlight.
* Check on vulnerable individuals: Regularly check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those with chronic health conditions who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
* Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles: Temperatures inside a car can quickly become life-threatening.
While Wednesday is forecast to see slightly cooler temperatures with a high near 89 degrees and a chance of showers and thunderstorms, the early part of the week demands vigilance from all Long Islanders to mitigate the risks associated with this intense heat.
