Smoke, Heat Slam Long Island: Air Unhealthy, Temps Could Feel Like 105 Degrees
Air Quality Alert:
An Air Quality Health Advisory for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is in effect for Long Island until midnight EDT tonight (Sunday, July 27, 2025). This advisory was issued due to smoke drifting in from wildfires, likely from Canada, which has caused unhealthy air pollution levels. The Air Quality Index (AQI) for Long Island is predicted to be 101 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups).
Fine particulate matter can penetrate deep into the respiratory tract, potentially causing eye, nose, throat, and lung irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and shortness of breath. It can also worsen conditions like asthma and heart disease. Sensitive groups, including young children, seniors, those who exercise outdoors, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or heart problems, are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity. Everyone should reduce long or intense outdoor activities and take more breaks.
Heat Advisory:
A Heat Advisory is also in effect for Long Island. While today's heat index is currently around 78°F, it is forecast to rise significantly. Heat index values are likely to be in the upper 90s on Monday, and could reach 100 to 105°F on Tuesday. The advisory is in effect from 11 AM Monday, July 28, to 8 PM EDT Tuesday, July 29.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity poses a risk of heat illnesses. It is crucial to take precautions, especially for seniors, those with chronic health problems, and individuals without air conditioning. Recommendations include:
* Using air conditioning or seeking out cool spaces.
* Checking on vulnerable friends, family members, and neighbors.
* Scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments if working outdoors.
* Moving anyone overcome by heat to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and 911 should be called immediately.
Residents are urged to stay informed about the latest air quality and heat advisories. A toll-free Air Quality Hotline is available at 1-800-535-1345.
