INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 5-Dec-2023
Summary: nervous, but allowed handling
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:

12/4: Kirkland was engaged with cheese sprayed on the floor. Handler attempt to collar him and he quickly head flipped. He was left alone until finished with his treat.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Level 3
Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:
No children (under 13): Due to social hyperarousal, we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges:
Resource guarding
Basic manners/poor impulse control
Social hyperarousal
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Fearful
Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:
Resource guarding: Kirkland shows a potential to resource guard food items. We recommend she be left alone while engaged with food or treats. Should you have to remove something from Kirkland, we recommend always trading for something of a higher value. Please see handout on Resource Guarding.
Basic manners/poor impulse control: Kirkland is a young, energetic dog who lacks basic manners. She is often jumping up high seeking attention. She should be taught default behavior such as sit or down when greeting new people. She is very food motivated and can benefit from positive reinforcement training. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control.
Social hyperarousal: Kirkland can become over aroused when someone new enters the yard or the room. She may jump up high and become mouthy. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Kirkland to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. She should be rewarded with treats when calm. If she escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Kirkland. Please see handout on Arousal.
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: When excited, Kirkland can begin to use her mouth. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Kirkland's teeth make contact with skin).
Fearful: Kirkland has been observed to become fearful when meeting new people, lowering her body, backing away. She does warm up quickly, but requires a slow, considerate approach. Please see handout on Fearful.
Anxiety: Kirkland appears anxious in the care center, whining and pacing in kennel. We have no history on her behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used.
