Significant Milestone: Initial Turbine Finished for Offshore Wind Farm to Provide Energy for Long Island Residences.

Crews working on the South Fork Wind farm, located approximately 35 miles off the coast of Long Island, have finished installing the first of 12 wind turbines, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office announced Monday, Nov. 20.

Following the completion of the project's initial monopile foundation in June 2023, crews have now reached the milestone of installing the first of 12 wind turbines for the South Fork Wind Farm.

Upon its completion, the wind farm will link to the power grid through an underwater cable, capable of supplying electricity to 70,000 homes in Long Island, as stated by Governor Hochul's office.

This signifies the inaugural utility-scale offshore wind farm in the United States, part of New York's impressive portfolio of five active offshore wind projects, establishing the state's position with the largest such portfolio in the country.

Governor Hochul highlighted the significance, stating, "New York is leading the path to a clean energy future, and the installation of our first offshore wind turbine marks a momentous step forward."

"In generating clean energy, we are not only pioneering a healthier and safer environment for future generations of New Yorkers," Governor Hochul emphasized.

"We are shaping a brighter, greener tomorrow, committed to a future where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand," expressed Governor Hochul.

The South Fork Wind project is anticipated to reduce up to six million tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to removing 60,000 cars from the road each year over a 25-year span.

Upon the full operation of all five offshore wind farms in the state, they are projected to generate a total of 4,300 megawatts of electricity, capable of powering over 2.4 million homes in New York.

Governor Hochul highlighted that the projects will not only contribute to sustainable energy but also create over 6,800 jobs in project management, component manufacturing, installation, and operations and management.

By 2035, state leaders aim for offshore wind farms to generate 9,000 megawatts, meeting nearly 30 percent of New York State's electricity needs—equivalent to powering nearly six million homes.

The installation of all 12 turbines for the South Fork Wind project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2023 or early 2024.

Ørsted US Offshore Wind, in collaboration with Eversource and the Long Island Power Authority, is overseeing the construction.
