Long Island Republicans sponsoring bill to repeal SALT cap

A new bill has been introduced by lawmakers regarding the SALT cap, as confirmed in Westbury, Long Island.

The restoration of the deduction for state and local taxes is their objective.

Ellen Andrasick, a resident of Franklin Square, expressed that our tax funds are repeatedly subjected to taxation.

The elderly person asserts that it is a form of double taxation. Andrasick has become unable to claim back her state and local taxes, which exceed the $10,000 limit.

She expressed that the actions taken against them have caused a great deal of pain, particularly for the middle class.

Those living in suburban areas with high taxes were required to pay taxes on top of the taxes they already paid due to the change that took place in 2017.

The newly elected Republican Congressional delegation from Long Island has made it their objective to eliminate the despised cap.

Representative Andrew Garbarino stated that numerous individuals in our district have been severely impacted by the financial effects of this cap.

Representatives Nick LaLota and Anthony D'Esposito, along with Garbarino who created the SALT caucus, believe that the time is ideal for correcting a mistake. Rep. George Santos was not included in the invitation.

"We like to refer to ourselves as the 'Long Island Three-ish,'" D'Esposito said.

The bill is being sponsored to remove the cap and there is hope that House Republicans from affected states will pressure their party leadership, which implemented the cap, to support the bill.

D'Esposito stated that Republican victories in typically Democratic states such as New York, California, and Oregon will have a significant impact on the outcome of the election.

LaLota stated that the House Republican leadership values our stance and priorities, and they give significant consideration to our proposed bills. As a result, we plan to utilize this partnership.

In three years, the cap will expire if Congress takes no action.

Garbarino stated that they will have to confront them soon, implying that time is on their side and they won't move.

Some Democrats argue that the deductions must now be reinstated entirely, reminding people of how they arrived at this point.

Robert Zimmerman, the Democratic National Committeeman, stated that although he is pleased with the addition of the Long Island Three to the cause, the truth remains that the tax burden is solely due to the implementation of the Trump tax cut proposal, the Trump tax cut plan, and the corresponding Republican backing.

Garbarino emphasized the need for a bipartisan approach, noting that despite having control of the House, the Senate, and the presidency last year, the Democrats were unable to get it done.

This week, the bill will be brought before Congress and make its way through the legislative process, with potential to grant tax relief by Tax Day next year.

It is co-sponsored by Democrat Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, and has support from 45 other members of Congress representing both parties.
