On Monday, Representative George Santos, who is currently facing difficulties, declared on Twitter that he plans to run for re-election in 2024.
The congressman representing the 3rd District of New York stated that the goal is to regain control of our country and return greatness to New York.
In March, Santos came under scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee for providing false information about his history and concerns surrounding his financial contributions during his campaign.
After making the announcement, Congressman Santos was interviewed by Doug Geed from News 12.
Santos expressed that he ran for office with the intention of bringing about change and fulfilling the promises he made during his campaign. While acknowledging that he may have had personal failures like anyone else, he remains resolute in his commitment to follow through on the pledges he made in the 2022 election.
Santos' initial move in Congress was promoting the SALT Relief Act that increased the SALT cap to $50,000.
Santos says that people in Long Island have been suffering and although he was a supporter of President Trump in 2017 when the measure was passed, he openly criticized him.
Residents, local elected officials, and community groups in his district have criticized the newly-elected Republican congressman for being unresponsive. However, Santos claims that his office has already successfully resolved more than half of the 230 case works received. In addition, he is making an effort to meet with constituents both in Washington D.C. and within the 3rd Congressional District.
Santos has been urged to step down by the Long Island GOP who have also declared their unwillingness to back him in a future election bid.
Santos declared, "I am not intimidated by them. My purpose for running is not to cater to politicians or the Republican Party of Nassau County. My aim is to serve the citizens of America."
Peter King, a former Republican representative from Seaford, is skeptical of Santos' ability to complete his initial term and win a second.
King asserts that even though he doubts he would ever get the Republican nomination, if he did, he would suffer a definitive loss in the general election. Additionally, King suspects that he will probably be expelled from the House of Representatives during this summer.
Santos' recent report reflects that he only has $25,000 in campaign funds, which is a small amount compared to what political analysts say he should possess at this stage of his tenure.
Statement of Nassau County Republican Committee Chairman Joseph G. Cairo, Jr:"The Nassau County Republican Committee is focused on the future, and George Santos has no place in upcoming Nassau GOP campaigns. We will not nominate George Santos for re-election to Congress or for any other office. The serial liar has disgraced the House of Representatives and has deceived the public. His actions and comments have been designed to mislead the public about his background, qualifications and virtually every other facet of his public persona.
If George Santos should actually launch a re-election campaign, the Nassau County Republican Committee will nominate a well-qualified candidate who is honest, forthright and worthy of the public's trust and support. The Nassau GOP has interacted with several prospective candidates who would defeat the 'pretender' who is currently occupying the office and win election against all other prospective opponents. It's time for George Santos to go!"
Statement from New York Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs:"George Santos is 16 days late. April Fools' Day was on the first of this month, and that would have been a more appropriate date to announce his re-election campaign.I am sure that Congressmembers D'Esposito, Garbarino, Lalota, Lawler, Molinaro, and Williams are all very excited to be running with George Santos. If these Representatives had done more to pressure Speaker Kevin McCarthy to bring a vote to expel him rather than just pay lip service, they would have been spared the embarrassment of running with George Santos, or whatever his name is."
