MASTIC — A violent street fight in Mastic left a 21-year-old man critically injured and two teenage sisters facing serious assault charges, Suffolk County Police said Sunday.
Authorities say the altercation erupted late Saturday night near Dana Avenue and Dean Avenue, where officers responding to multiple 911 calls found the victim bleeding from multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition and, according to relatives, has been placed in a medically induced coma.
Police identified the suspects as Diamond King, 18, and Myia King-Harrison, 19, both of Bay Shore. Investigators say the sisters were part of a group that confronted the victim and his younger sister, sparking a fight that quickly turned violent.
Family members of the victim told reporters that the young man, identified by them as Nico Cassetana, stepped in to protect his 14-year-old sister when the confrontation escalated. During the struggle, one of the sisters allegedly stabbed him before the group fled the scene.
Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad arrested both sisters a short time later. They are each charged with first-degree gang assault and first-degree assault, both felonies.
Neighbors reported hearing screaming and chaos outside moments before police arrived. “It sounded like kids arguing at first,” one resident said. “Then we realized someone had been seriously hurt — it was terrifying.”
Investigators are reviewing cellphone video and witness statements to determine what led up to the attack and whether additional suspects may have been involved.
The sisters were expected to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
