In a significant development, New York Attorney General Letitia James has unveiled a substantial settlement with a nursing home based in East Meadow.

Fulton Commons Care Center is mandated to pay up to $8.6 million and implement monitoring systems to overhaul both healthcare and financial operations within the nursing home, as stated by Attorney General Letitia James' office.

Attorney General Letitia James revealed that the settlement follows years of financial fraud and mistreatment of residents at Fulton Commons Care Center.

In 2018, the Office of the Attorney General initiated an investigation into Fulton Commons, revealing pervasive neglect, abuse, mistreatment, and financial fraud that had been longstanding.

Attorney General Letitia James condemned the prolonged mistreatment endured by Fulton Commons residents, emphasizing that they faced traumatic injuries and degrading living conditions. She pointed out that instead of investing in critical care, the facility's owners and operators diverted millions of taxpayer funds for personal gain. The trust placed by the most vulnerable New Yorkers and their families in Fulton Commons for dignified care was betrayed, resulting in neglect and abuse.

The owners and operator of Fulton Commons are obligated to contribute up to $7 million to a fund for implementing necessary reforms to safeguard residents' safety. Additionally, they will pay an extra $1.6 million in restitution to Medicaid and Medicare, compensating for the funds that were unlawfully diverted.

Attorney General Letitia James achieved a guilty plea and sentencing for the Fulton Commons corporation, holding them accountable for criminal acts related to the concealment of reports regarding sexual assaults against residents in both 2020 and 2022.

Attorney General Letitia James emphasized, "We are ensuring that the owners and operator of Fulton Commons are held responsible for their negligence, and that the facility makes all the necessary changes to guarantee its residents get the care they deserve."

An independent healthcare monitor will now have partial control over Fulton Commons, overseeing and mandating reforms aimed at enhancing resident care, including measures such as the hiring of additional staff.
