CENTRAL ISLIP — A Honduran man who admitted to fatally shooting his friend during a late-night argument in a parked car outside a Central Islip home will serve decades in prison — and then face deportation, officials said.

According to prosecutors, Jeremias Anaribamoran, 48, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the killing of Gustavo Godinez-Carcamo, 40, on March 15, 2025. The two men, who were friends and neighbors, had been drinking together that night when a heated argument broke out inside a vehicle parked outside Godinez-Carcamo’s home.

During the fight, Anaribamoran pulled out a handgun and fired three shots, striking his friend at least once. Police found Godinez-Carcamo slumped in the back seat, dead at the scene. The murder weapon was recovered nearby, along with shell casings that matched the firearm.

“This was a senseless act of violence between two people who knew each other well,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said in a statement. “Instead of walking away, the defendant chose to end a life — and now he will lose his freedom and his right to remain in this country.”

Anaribamoran was arrested later that night after witnesses identified him to detectives. During questioning, he reportedly confessed to the shooting, claiming the argument had “gotten out of control.”

Under New York law, second-degree murder carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. After serving his time, Anaribamoran — who is not a U.S. citizen — will be handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation to Honduras.

Court officials said Anaribamoran waived his right to trial and accepted the plea deal in September, avoiding what could have been an even lengthier legal battle. He is scheduled to be sentenced later this year in Suffolk County Supreme Court.

Neighbors described the killing as deeply unsettling for their usually quiet block. “They were friends, always laughing together,” said one resident who asked not to be named. “No one could believe it when the police showed up.”

Family members of Godinez-Carcamo attended court hearings, some holding photos of the victim. “He didn’t deserve this,” one relative said. “He was kind, hardworking, and loved his family.”

The tragedy has sparked renewed discussions about gun violence and the devastating consequences of impulsive decisions fueled by anger and alcohol. Law enforcement officials urged residents to seek help before conflicts escalate.

“Disputes can turn deadly in seconds,” Tierney added. “This case shows how one violent choice can destroy two lives — the victim’s and the killer’s.”

Anaribamoran remains in Suffolk County custody and is expected to begin his prison term immediately after sentencing. Once released, ICE officials confirmed he will be permanently removed from the United States.

Editor’s note: All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. In this case, the defendant entered a guilty plea, concluding the criminal proceedings.
