On April 13, Raymond A. Tierney, the Suffolk County District Attorney, declared that Jose Romero of Centereach, who is 34, admitted to committing the crime of having sexual intercourse with a 6-year-old child and was convicted of First Degree Rape.

District Attorney Tierney stated that the defendant took advantage of a young and defenseless child to fulfill his depraved cravings. The victim deserves commendation for speaking out and giving a statement during the Grand Jury trial, which led to the defendant's conviction. The plea agreement guarantees that the victim will not have to confront her abuser in court, sparing her from further trauma.

Based on the inquiry and the defendant's own confession during his admission of guilt, Romero engaged in sexual intercourse with the 6-year-old victim in October 2021. Subsequently, he provided the victim with a small amount of money, instructing her to keep silent about the incident and not to inform her parents.

Romero made efforts to hide his offense, however, the young victim promptly reported the abuse to her parents who then notified the authorities. The victim was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where a sexual assault nurse examiner retrieved DNA proof that connected Romero to the offense.

Romero admitted to committing First Degree Rape, a Class B violent felony, before the County Court Judge, Honorable Judge Karen M. Wilutis, on April 12, 2023. Judge Wilutis detained Romero without granting bail and he may face 12 years imprisonment with 10 years of post-release supervision. Moreover, he will be required to register as a sex offender after his sentencing. Romero's court appearance is scheduled for May 12, 2023.
