A jury on Long Island found a former NYPD officer guilty in the passing of his 8-year-old son, whom he had kept in a frigid garage.

At approximately 9:40 a.m., on Friday, January 17, 2020, Michael Valva, aged 43, informed law enforcement that Thomas Valva slipped and fell in the driveway of his Center Moriches residence, only to be discovered deceased in the basement later on.

This past Friday, Nov. 4, the jury in Riverhead, after deliberating for six weeks, convicted Michael Valva of second-degree homicide and four counts of child endangerment.

Thomas Valva was said to have perished from hypothermia due to his father's mandate to spend the night in an icy garage, as alleged by prosecutors.

A forensic examination of security cameras that had been placed in different sections of the house disclosed Thomas and Anthony slumbering in the garage without any cushions, linens, or mattresses on Jan. 15.

The Suffolk County District Attorney, Raymond Tierney, declared that the jury had announced a guilty verdict regarding the heartbreaking murder of Thomas Valva by his father, the defendant, Michael Valva. This outcome cannot repair the agony Thomas experienced from his parent, the same man who should have safeguarded, cared for, and unconditionally cherished Thomas and his elder sibling, Anthony.

The magnitude of this case is difficult to fathom, with Our prosecutors, court staff, and jurors going through a tough trial. The tragedy of Thomas suffering through this heartbreaking abuse is inexcusable, and we all feel helpless in the inability to undo what has been done.
