Coram Man Charged in Brazen Selden Shooting That Left 21-Year-Old Wounded

SELDEN, NY — A 23-year-old man from Coram is behind bars this week after being charged in a bold and violent shooting that left a 21-year-old man wounded in Selden, Suffolk County police announced.

The incident took place around 10:40 p.m. on Monday, July 7, on Comet Road — a normally quiet residential street that was suddenly jolted by gunfire. According to investigators, the victim had just parked his vehicle when he was approached by a man armed with a handgun.

The suspect allegedly demanded the victim’s belongings. As the victim tried to get out of the car, the assailant fired a single shot, striking him in the leg. A brief scuffle followed before the gunman fled the scene on foot, leaving the young man bleeding in his car.

Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and is expected to recover.

After an intensive investigation involving eyewitness accounts, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence, detectives from the Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad arrested Marcus Hunter, 23, of Coram, on July 15.

Hunter now faces a slate of serious charges, including:

  • First-degree attempted robbery
  • Second-degree assault
  • Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon

He was arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip and is being held pending further legal proceedings.

“This kind of violence has no place in our community,” said one local resident, who asked not to be named. “People need to feel safe walking out their front door — not worry about being shot in their own driveway.”

Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether Hunter may be connected to other recent incidents in the area. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

This case underscores growing concerns about gun violence in suburban neighborhoods and the importance of swift, thorough police work in bringing suspects to justice.
