Authorities apprehend a woman allegedly involved in the theft of a car with a 7-year-old inside in Riverhead.
Law enforcement officials confirm the apprehension of a woman who reportedly stole a car in Riverhead, with a sleeping 7-year-old child inside. The arrest follows an investigation into the alarming incident.
According to reports, Shawanna James allegedly seized the opportunity to steal the car on Christmas Day, taking advantage of the vehicle being left unattended outside a convenience store.
Subsequently, the car, with the child still peacefully sleeping inside, was discovered at Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Flanders.
The mother of the child involved is currently facing child endangerment charges, according to the police. Authorities allege that she left the car unsecured and running, providing an opportunity for the theft to occur. The decision to leave the vehicle in such a vulnerable state has led to legal consequences, as law enforcement emphasizes the importance of responsible practices to ensure the safety of children and prevent potential criminal activities. Investigations will likely delve into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the factors contributing to the child's exposure to risk in an unlocked and running vehicle.
