Loaded Handgun Found at Splish Splash Water Park, Police Say

CALVERTON – A loaded handgun was discovered at Splish Splash Water Park on Wednesday evening following a disturbance involving several juveniles, according to Riverhead Town Police. The unsettling discovery was made by a park employee and has prompted an active investigation by detectives.

Police were called to the popular summer destination just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday after the employee found the weapon in the wake of an altercation. According to a statement released by the Riverhead Police Department, patrol officers quickly responded to the scene, secured the handgun, and turned it over to the detective division.

As of Friday afternoon, detectives are working to determine who was in possession of the firearm. No arrests have been announced, and police are asking anyone with information to contact the Riverhead Police Department.

The incident is a stark reminder of the security challenges facing public spaces, even those designed for family fun. Danielle Trombetta, director of marketing for Splish Splash, said in an email, "Safety is our top priority. We are fully cooperating with the Riverhead Police Department as they investigate this matter further."

The discovery has sparked concern among park-goers and local residents, who were enjoying a typical summer day at the 96-acre water park. A park visitor, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "It's shocking to think something like this could happen here. You come to a place like Splish Splash to have a good time with your kids, not to worry about a gun."

This is not the first time a weapon has been found at the park. In 2019, a man was arrested after attempting to enter Splish Splash with what turned out to be a BB gun that looked like a handgun. However, the discovery of a loaded firearm on park grounds represents a far more serious security breach.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500 ext. 312.
