Race Against the Freeze: LICH Desperate to Find and Shelter Long Islanders in Danger
As a record-breaking arctic blast grips Long Island, plunging temperatures into life-threatening territory, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) is scrambling to get vulnerable individuals off the streets and into safe, warm shelters.
"This is a true emergency," declared LICH official], their voice tinged with urgency. "These frigid temperatures pose a severe and immediate threat to the lives of those experiencing homelessness. We cannot afford to lose even one person."
LICH teams are working around the clock, deploying mobile units to known encampments and high-risk areas across the island. Outreach workers are equipped with emergency supplies, including thermal blankets, hand warmers, and warm clothing, while offering immediate shelter placements and connecting individuals with essential services.
"Many individuals facing homelessness grapple with complex challenges – mental health issues, substance abuse, and past trauma – that can make seeking shelter daunting," explained a source "Our teams build rapport, offering support and understanding, to overcome these barriers and ensure individuals receive the critical care they need."
To meet the unprecedented demand, LICH has collaborated with local municipalities and shelters to significantly increase shelter capacity.
"This is a collective effort," emphasized another LICH official. "Every organization, every individual, has a role to play. If you see someone struggling in the cold, please do not hesitate to reach out to us or your local authorities. Every call could save a life."
LICh is urging the public to be vigilant and report any sightings of individuals sleeping outdoors to their local police department or to the LICH hotline at 631-464-4314 x 118.
"Even a few hours in these extreme conditions can have devastating consequences," warned LICH "Let us all come together to ensure that no one on Long Island loses their life to this brutal cold."
